This series was taken while on tour with my band Mehenet. Some were taken along our first East Coast tour, others on a short stint we did in Texas. I set out to document the underground metal scene from the perspective that I have as an artist directly involved in the subculture. I chose the Polaroid as it seemed to fit the nature of what underground metal is all about: gritty, hazy, and intentionally underproduced. Did I mention they’re both FUCKING SQUARES. But on a serious note, the underground metal scene has interesting figures mostly hidden under the guise of anonymity, and instant film also plays into that by how unpredictable it can be with its tones. The grit of a misshapen image can be more beautiful than the original composition.
