5. KAKAFONI “DEATH IN MIND” LP (MANGEL)
This “side project” consists of the four guys from Gasmiasma and two veteran Swedish musicians adding to the cacophony (pun intended). Though noise is not the factor, but rather extreme uniform punk done blazing fast (thanks to the drumming skills of Dan McCoy). The work these guys put in (as well as the endless creativity) is amazing. This, along with their 7”, is a no-brainer.
4. SHORT LEASH DEMO
You might have read the MRR review by this local (mostly) female band. Seven angry songs to get you pumped up and slam(dance) your ass off. Thankfully, this band has started playing around town a lot since they finished their U.S. summer tour. Essential punk rock not to be overlooked.
3. NIGHTLAND DEMO
More post punk dark wave from Heat Dust and Sisters in Christ personnel. No song titles, no lyrics, no info at all. This is one release you might not see if you’re not looking for it, so don’t pass it up.
2. GLUT “PRIMITIVE” AND “SHOWING TEETH” CASSETTES
Another local “super group” with members of Ossacrux, The Pallbearers, Gasmiasma, and Split Lips. Straight ahead ‘80s hardcore worship. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen a New Orleans band pull this sound off so flawlessly. Another ace in the hole recorded by James Whitten.
1. MINOR FRET 7”
Besides the title being brilliant, the sound these guys came up with for four Minor Threat covers was exceptionally creative. Listening to “Straight Edge” or “Seeing Red” done at a sludgy snail’s pace was completely unexpected but very welcome. Why this hadn’t been done before, we’ll never know. Vocals recorded by Tad Doyle nonetheless.
